Tasting Notes
The top wine is the eponymous 2017 Montsecano, which was cropped from a challenging year with low yields due to frost. They also used a higher percentage of full clusters in the fermentation. I get more ripeness and more relevance of the fruit here. There is no irrigation here, and the grapes get concentrated, even if the alcohol is lower. This has more concentration, depth, power and potential - it's very fine but discreet, a little shy and in need of time in bottle. There is an extra dimension here compared with Refugio, and it's juicy, with perfectly ripe tannins. The difference is that they had so very little grapes that they had to use two 700-liter concrete eggs, where the fermentation temperature never reached above 20 degrees Celsius; so, the fermentation was also very slow, akin to cooking at low temperature in a cocotte instead of in the microwave.
