Tasting Notes
The Quijada family, which owns very old carménère vineyards in the Apalta zone in the Colchagua Valley, has had a contract to sell grapes to Santa Rita since the 1990s. That fruit has been used for Pewën, the house's top carménère, since 2004. The style of that fruit, however, has changed significantly, especially since the 2017 vintage, when winemaker Sebastián Labbé decided to move up the harvest date, and, basically, stop being afraid of the variety's herbal notes. Those herbal notes are here (the same ones that may have frightened many off a decade ago), accompanied by red fruit and spices in a tense wine with unusually crunchy acidity and fruit that's very generous, and yet very deep at the same time. Score - 97. (Descorchados, 2020)
