Vanel's 2005 Coteaux du Languedoc Melanie - 70% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache - smells of cassis, black raspberry, thyme, black tea, marjoram, and charred meat. Polished to the point of soothing richness - like the corresponding Fine Amor, in defiance of the vintage - the palate here is generously fruited yet underpinned by fine tannin and exhibits considerable carnal and mineral depth. This finishes with a wonderful combination of grip, richness, and refreshment and should be worth following for at least another 6-8 years. Score - 91.
