Tasting Notes
The 2010 RIESLING (this winery near Lisbon has a flair for experimentation, also making things like Pinot Noir and Alvarinho) comes in at 12.5%. Fruity at first, yet increasingly crisp, mouthpuckering and steely on the finish, this has considerable power and acidity, a wine that takes no prisoners and becomes increasingly brooding and gripping. The longer it was open, the better constructed it seemed. Not always the most classic version of this grape, it nonetheless is absolutely solid and precise, lingering on the mouthwatering finish and showing fine persistence. While I'm not entirely sure this will ring the bell of every Riesling fancier - it doesn't quite seem as 'spot on' as the Pinot Noir, for instance-- on its own terms it is beautifully constructed and it has a chance to age pretty well. It will be interested to see how this ages - that is usually where Riesling imitators fail. In the meanwhile, this seems simply terrific. Drink: 2011-2015. Score - 90. (Mark Squires, erob
