Tasting Notes
Nose: not unattractive: steady, over-ripened grape keeps the barley in place. Taste: at first the clean, sweet grape sends the senses heading toward a state of dormancy; then all hell breaks loose as the spices arrive. Big, salivating stuff as the barley escapes its oaky confines to run riot, then a bitter cocoa nod towards the oak. Finish: settles, though that cocoa is now met by some light coffee tones as it bitters out; the barley still makes some juicy waves. Balance: I can so see why this butt was selected: it wasn't for the relatively plain Jane nose, that's for sure. Someone obviously took a mouthful of this and thought: 'bloody hell!' Massive in a breathtaking kind of way. Score - 92. (Jim Murray, Whisky Bible, 2010)
