The 2008 '2 Worlds Reserva' (Quinta do Alqueve), the '2 worlds' principally referencing the blend of the traditional (in this year, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca) and international (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot), is aged in 20% new oak. This is not the winery's best wine, but it is the best value this year. It opens a little tight, with a heightened sensation of fullness and richness in its youth. It is not, in fact, jammy and it evolves beautifully as it airs out, becoming far more elegant and showing a lot of steel and power, crispness and more purity of fruit along the way. Some may well prefer it over other wines for that reason alone. Whenever I began to focus on its fruit, its structure reminded me that it was a more complete wine. Just when I thought it was proving with long aeration that it would thin - well, it did a bit - it seemed to recover and flesh out again.
