Tasting Notes
The NV Moscatel Capricho d'Goya is an old, complex Moscatel aged in a solera system, and therefore a non-vintage wine. It has a dark mahogany color and a complex nose with aromas of candied orange rind, tobacco, nuts, curry, coffee, toffee and dates. The palate is sweet, but it would be impossible to guess it has some 230 grams of sugar as it has great acidity and freshness. The wine is fortified to 15%, which certainly helps to lift the wine. It is produced by the process that Mr. Camilo Castilla described during the early days of the winery sometime in the 19th century: it is aged for at least seven years, the first four or five in crystal demijohns kept outside and exposed to heat and cold (depending on the seasons), later in old 9,000-liter oak vats from that era. It's moved to 225-liter barriques, and finally to 600-liter old wood vats from where it's bottled twice a year.
