Langtry Estate became the first winery in America to have its own AVA ( American Viticultural Area , their appellation system ) when the Guenoc AVA was created in 1981 . And yes , the winery is named after the famous 19th century American actress Lillie Langtry , who bought the property and produced its first wines there in 1888 .
