The 2001 vintage at Château Soutard showed wonderful success with their Merlot grapes , leading it to dominate the blend . Prime aromas suggest sour cherry , tobacco leaves , licorice and black pepper . This early - maturing vintage is just now beginning to hit its stride . Look for a nice and round fruitiness supported by velvety tannins . It will also hold for another five years or perhaps more .
