This year marks the retirement of Masi's legendary managing director, Sandro Boscaini. It's difficult to overstate the importance of Sandro and his family to the modern wine scene of Veneto. Sandro's family has been making wine for seven generations; the story began in 1772 when the family purchased hillside vineyards in a place called Vaio dei Masi ('little valley of Masi'). Sandro took the reins in 1978, becoming managing director of Masi. He established Masi Technical Group (a team of experts dedicated to wine research) and led the development of a new, modern take on the time-honoured appassimento process. He and Masi shaped the concept of cru Amarone, rediscovered the ancient Oseleta grape and amassed the most extensive Amarone cellars in the world. Adding another feather to the cap of Sandro's career, Masi was named 2018 Winery of the Year by Gambero Rosso.
