Mac�n is one of the most eagerly anticipated new projects ever, let alone in Rioja. Come on, a partnership between Edmond de Rothschild and the most venerable wine estate in Spain, Vega Sicilia, in one of the world's most beloved wine regions? It sounds almost too good to be true. This new project has brought with it some innovation, for Rioja anyway, in the implementation of what is referred to as the 'ch�teau concept,' where the wine is produced from grapes grown only in proprietary vineyards. The traditional Rioja method would be to purchase grapes from independent growers. Though the Rothschild and Alvarez families began working together here in the early 2000s, creating at least four vintages to establish exactly what it was they were hoping to accomplish, it was not until 2009 that they produced their first official vintage.
