This shares a similar aromatic profile to the Whimsy 'Richness' chardonnay, the sister wine in the range in 2012, with its natural, pleasantly oxidative appeal and very ripe, lightly bruised orchard fruit character. In any case, this too, is a rich and full bodied chardonnay, more focused on texture and layers of flavours rather than aromatic precision, and all the more interesting for it. The palate manages a substantial frame with lightness and vibrancy - there's a real sense of tension and balance, where phenolics play the role of acids here to lighten and freshen, while a certain salty note (minerality) enlivens the long finish. But make no mistake, this remains a full and generous wine, with an implicit sensation of sweetness. Immensely satisfying. I'd say this should age well until the next decade. Tasted June 2014.
